Winda Energy Enters Energy Storage Market, Building 30 MW Battery Facility in Rautavaara

Renewable energy project developer Winda Energy Oy is expanding its operations into energy storage projects and will build an industrial-scale electricity storage facility in Rautavaara. The project, carried out in cooperation with the Czech tech energy company Second Foundation, will support the stability of Finland’s power system and advance the clean transition by enabling more efficient utilization of renewable energy.

The battery storage facility, with a power output of 30 megawatts (MW) and a capacity of 60 megawatt-hours (MWh), is Winda Energy’s first energy storage project. Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with the facility expected to enter commercial operation in 2026.

Energy storage systems are a key flexible component of the future energy system. They can respond quickly to fluctuations in electricity consumption and generation, thereby improving the security of supply. Furthermore, these storage facilities help to balance electricity price volatility.

“The Rautavaara project opens the door for Winda to the growing energy storage market, which is one of the cornerstones of Finland’s clean transition. This is a strategically significant step for us, perfectly complementing our development portfolio of over 30 wind and solar power projects,” says Tuomas Hooli, CEO of Winda Energy.

The project is being carried out as a European collaboration – the integrated battery will be supplied by the German/Czech company GAZ ENERGY and the inverter by the Spanish company Ingeteam S.A.
